The MA in social work with professional recognition provides students with the skills required for a career in social work. Students acquire theoretical knowledge and receive clinical training in working procedures in social work.

What is the study about?
The MA in social work with professional recognition teaches students methods for working with different demographics in our society, including interview techniques and specific approaches to working with children and adolescents, groups and families.
Much of the programme is made up of professional training at institutions outside the University of Iceland under the guidance of specialised vocational teachers.
Programme structure
The programme is 120 ECTS and is organised as two years of full-time study.
The programme is made up of:
Courses, 60 ECTS
Professional training, 30 ECTS
Final thesis, 30 ECTS.
Organisation of teaching
The programme is taught face to face and attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to attend from 8.20 am to 4 pm most working days.
This programme is taught in Icelandic but most textbooks are in English.
Main objectives
The programme provides students with the skills required for a career in social work. Students acquire theoretical knowledge and receive clinical training in the methods used by social workers. They take courses in interview techniques, working with children and adolescents, groups and families, and therapy.
Students are also trained in methodology and complete an MA thesis.
Other
After completing this programme, students may apply to the Directorate of Health for the legally protected title of social worker.
Completing the programme allows a student to apply for doctoral studies.
