A four-semester (two-year) postgraduate academic programme in translation studies, offered by the Faculty of Icelandic and Comparative Cultural Studies and the Faculty of Languages and Cultures at the University of Iceland School of Humanities. Students shall complete 120 ECTS, of which the final project accounts for at least 30. Completing the programme confers an MA degree. Normal student progression is based on 30 ECTS per semester. Admission requirements are a BA degree (cycle 1, level 2) with a first class grade in languages, or an equivalent qualification in another subject. An MA degree in translation studies confers the right to apply for a PhD programme in translation studies (cycle 3, level 5). The main aim of the Master's programme in translation studies is to train students to work as academics and literary/academic translators.
The postgraduate diploma in translation studies may count as the first part of the MA programme in translation studies. Generally, however, students take part of the programme in other subjects at the School of Humanities or at a university abroad. A third of courses (30 ECTS) are in translation studies, another third are in translation-related subjects in Icelandic, and the final third are in translation-related subjects in a foreign language.Students select courses in consultation with the programme coordinator.Students may take up to 60 ECTS in postgraduate courses in translations studies and languages at a foreign university, on the condition that at least 20 ECTS are taken in courses at UI. Students shall consult with the programme coordinator regarding study at a foreign university.
