Specialization: Teaching Icelandic as a Second Language for Teachers

This programme prepares students to teach Icelandic in Icelandic compulsory schools. The programme is open to anyone who has completed a BEd degree in general teacher education specialising in Icelandic teaching, or a BA/BS degree in a related subject. Certified compulsory school teachers may apply for the programme regardless of specialisation in previous studies.

The programme is 120 ECTS and is organised as two years of full-time study or up to four years of part-time study.

Students choose between the following specialisations based on their academic background:

  • Icelandic teaching - five year teacher education (following BEd degree)

  • Teaching Icelandic as a second language - five year teacher education (following BEd degree)

  • General teacher education following BA/BS degree

  • Icelandic teaching for licensed teachers

  • Teaching Icelandic as a second language for licensed teachers
