The Nordic Master Program in Sustainable Production and Utilisation of Marine Bio-resources, MAR-BIO, is a research based Masters program collaboratively offered by three Nordic Universities: University of Gothenburg, Nord University, Bodø, and Hólar UniversityThe MAR-BIO program aims to:

facilitate student mobility between the Nordic countries and allow exchange of knowledge and research between the Consortium Universities,
combine competences from the Nordic countries in order to educate the next generation of professionals within the area of marine circular economy and utilization of marine bioresources,
develop new networking and partnership opportunities between academic institutions, the industry, the authorities as well as with marketing institutions.

MAR-BIO target inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to the interactions between fisheries, aquaculture and production and utilization of marine bio-resources with a special focus on entrepreneurship. This will prepare the student for a wide array of job opportunities, as a PhD student or for working in the industry within the area of circular bio-economy and blue growth.

The MAR-BIO programme have Erasmus agreements between all Consortium Universities, and Erasmus grant can be applied to for mobility.

The acronym MAR-BIO stands for Nordic Master Program in Sustainable Production and Utilization of Marine Bio Resourses

The Master study includes a research project (60 ECTS) and courses (60 ECTS) for a total of 120ECTS. The usual study time is two years.

The course work includes three mandatory courses run one after another by each partner university (15 ECTS madatory course), including mobility to Norway and Sweden at the start of the first semester. Another mandatory course is the Method and experimental design course which can be taken in the first or third semester (for 10 ECTS). The other 35 ECTS of course work can be taken in any of the three partner universities (i.e. Hólar University, the University of Gothenburg in Sweden or Nord University in Norway).

The research project falls under the rules and regulation of Masters studies at Hólar University, with the exception that the student will graduate from at least two of the consortium institutions, including the one at which the final project is written.Within a year of starting the Master, the student will give an open lecture, where the scientific background of the research project are introduced, the research plan explained and first results introduced (when possible). At that time the Master‘s committee will evaluate the progress in the study and if the student will be allowed to continue his/her studies. The master project ends with submission of a thesis and an oral defense. At the same time as the thesis is submitted, the student needs to provide a confirmation that the course work has been completed. The thesis and defense are evaluated by an examination committee, which includes the advisor, a member of advisory committee and an external examiner. The defense is supervised by a teacher from the department.
