The PhD programme at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Iceland (180 ECTS) provides extensive and solid training in research and academic work within fields of philosophy covered by the department members. It concludes with a public doctoral defence.

Doktorsnám í heimspeki er þriggja ára rannsóknatengt framhaldsnám. Námið er 180 e til prófgráðunnar philosophiae doctor, Ph.D. Umfang rannsóknaverkefnis skal vera 180 e. Nám til doktorsprófs lýtur reglum um doktorsnám við Hugvísindasvið. Inntökuskilyrði er rannsóknatengt MA-próf á viðkomandi fræðasviði með&nbsp;fyrstu einkunn eða, eftir atvikum, sambærilegt próf í annarri tengdri grein. 
Markmið doktorsnáms í heimspeki er að veita doktorsnemum sem besta og víðtækasta vísindalega þjálfun og undirbúning undir vísindastörf á fræðasviði sínu, t.d. háskólakennslu eða sérfræðistörf hjá rannsóknastofnun. Nauðsynlegt er að þessi þjálfun taki mið af bakgrunni hvers nemanda og því fræðasviði sem hann vill sérhæfa sig á.
