ISCED classification: 1015
The Diploma program in Tourism Studies is a concise and practical program. The program spans one year (3 semesters) and consists of 90 ECTS credits, with 30 ECTS credits dedicated to practical projects. The Diploma program in Tourism Studies prepares individuals for employment in the tourism industry and further education. The program places a strong emphasis on nature, culture, and sustainable development. Throughout the program, students gain insight into tourism as a profession, marketing and operations, tourist reception, the nature of recreation, and trail design.
Students who complete the Diploma program in Tourism Studies also acquire environmental rights in collaboration with the Environment Agency.
A student can add a diploma in Tourism Studies on top of previous education and thus specialize in the field of tourism and/or use the new diploma as a stepping stone into further education. Upon completion of 60 ECTS credits in the diploma program, a student can directly enter the second year of the BA programs offered by the Tourism Department at Hólar University College.
The program is conducted through distance learning, with students expected to attend sessions two to three times per semester. Otherwise, students can manage their studies within the framework of each course's schedule. Students typically take three courses simultaneously throughout the study period. Four out of five courses within each semester span half a semester (6-7 weeks), while one course extends throughout the entire semester. Projects are usually conducted until summer, and students enroll in autumn. It is possible to pursue the program alongside work commitments.
