<p>The Master's programme in sociology trains students in how to think about sociology, collect and process data, find practical applications for research, and work in an independent and professional manner.</p><h4>Is the program for you??</h4><ul>

</ul><h4>What is the study about?</h4><p>The MA in sociology offers several specialisations, allowing students to choose between a more theoretical or more practical programme. All MA programmes prepare students for doctoral studies in the social sciences or related fields, including programmes abroad. UI also offers shorter diploma programmes in certain subjects.</p>
<h4>Programme structure</h4>
<p>The programme is 120 ECTS and is organised as two years of full-time study.</p>
<p>The programme is made up of</p>

<li>Mandatory courses, 35 - 55 ECTS</li>
<li>Restricted electives, 10 - 30 ECTS</li>
<li>Free electives, 5-52 ECTS</li>
<li>Master's thesis, 30-60 ECTS</li>
</ul>

<p>Students may choose between the following specialisations:</p>

<li><strong>Criminology and society</strong></li>

<h4>Organisation of teaching</h4>
<p>This programme is taught in English and most textbooks are in English.</p>
<h4>Main objectives</h4>
<p>A degree in sociology provides basic training in academic approaches and working practices. Students also learn to work independently.</p>

<p>Completing the programme allows a student to apply for doctoral studies.</p>

</ul><h4>Um hvað snýst námið?</h4><p>Í félagsfræði á&nbsp;framhaldsstigi&nbsp;eru nokkur kjörsvið í boði, eftir því hvort nemendur vilja takast á við fræðilegt eða hagnýtt nám.&nbsp;Allar MA námsleiðir eru afar góður undirbúningur fyrir doktorsnám á sviði félagsvísinda og tengdra sviða, ekki síst erlendis. Þá eru í boði styttri námsleiðir sem veita diplómagráðu á tilteknum sviðum.</p>
<h4>Uppbygging náms</h4>
<p>Námið er 120 einingar og er sett upp sem fullt nám til tveggja ára.</p>

<li>Skyldunámskeið, 35 - 55 einingar</li>
<li>Bundin valnámskeið, 10 - 30 einingar</li>
<li>Frjáls valnámskeið, 5 - 25 einingar</li>

<p>Val er á milli eftirfarandi kjörsviða:</p>

<h4>Fyrirkomulag kennslu</h4>
<p>Námið er kennt á ensku og festar kennslubækur eru einnig á ensku.</p>
<h4>Meginmarkmið</h4>
<p>Nám í félagsfræði felur í sér undirstöðuþjálfun í fræðilegri hugsun og fræðilegum vinnubrögðum. Jafnframt er lögð áhersla á sjálfstæði og frumkvæði nemenda.</p>

<p>Námið veitir aðgang að doktorsnámi.</p>
