B.Sc. in Equine Science is a 3 year program of study which aims to give students a broad basic education in applied biology together with special knowledge in the basic subjects of agricultural science and in the biology of the horse, their management and training. Students obtain a solid basis in the natural sciences upon which more applied subjects in agriculture and special subjects related to the horse are added. After completion of their studies in Equine Science students should have obtained all around knowledge and understanding of animal science together with both scientific and applied knowledge of the main fields of equine science with an emphasis of the Icelandic horse. Students that graduate from this Programme are prepared for specialized jobs connected with horse breeding, horse farming, running of small businesses in this field and in firms servicing the trade. In addition, students should have acquired the basic scientific skills in the field of biology and agricultural science to be able to take part in research projects, enter post graduate studies and seek scientific knowledge on their own.

Icelandic matriculation examination (studentsprof: school leaving examination after four years of secondary school) or another secondary examination which the University board regards as equivalent. Additionally, it is recommended for students to have skills equivalent to: 2nd proficiency level in natural sciences, i.e. chemistry, physics, biology, and geology, 3rd proficiency level in English, especially regarding reading academic texts, and 2nd proficiency level in mathematics, particularly general computational methods in algebra and equations.

With the application to the program, confirmation of the completion of The Icelandic Riding Level 2 must be provided. If the student has not completed The Icelandic Riding Level 2 before the start of the program, the student must commit to obtaining The Icelandic Riding Level 2 within the first two academic years, with confirmation of completion no later than the end of the second academic year, or before the student enrolls in course 05.52.04 Riding I, at the beginning of the third academic year.

A BSc degree in Equine Science requires the completion of 180 ECTS, or 60 ECTS a year.It is mandatory that all 1st and 2nd year courses are finished before the 3rd year is started. Within the programme there are a 166 mandatory ECTS units, 4 elective ECTS units, and a 10 ECTS final project and BSc thesis. A BSc degree in Equine Science covers the economic, biological and technical aspects of animal husbandry and land utilization, with specialization in the breeding and management of horses. Various aspects of agricultural science are discussed, such as soil cultivation, fodder and feeding, genetics, animal biology, equipment and animal welfare, in addition to basic natural sciences like chemistry and biology. Specialized courses in equine studies are offered in the third year of study.
