Social and service centres

Older people are offered companionship, training and pastimes at service centers/social centers that operate in most of the country's municipalities.

Local authorities are obliged by law to ensure access to suitable social and leisure activities. In this regard, special emphasis must be placed on education and seminars on the rights of the elderly and adaptation to the changed circumstances that follow from ceasing participation in the labor market and maintaining general social activities.

The role and goal of the social work is to ensure the daily activity that is necessary for older people. A wide variety of activities takes place in the community centers, which are often run by associations of senior citizens.

They are, among other things:

  • Hot meals sold at lunchtime

  • Various courses

  • Gymnastics and dance

  • Theater trips and travel

  • A variety of handicrafts

Access to the service centers is open to all and older people are welcome at their own convenience.

The social work of municipalities needs to reach everyone, both those who live in good health and those who live with reduced skills and need help to be able to attend and use what is available.

It needs to be promoted with appropriate facilities and support, that people can pursue the health promotion and activity they are interested in, whether it relates to training and rehabilitation, or social and leisure activities.

A moderate fee is paied for some of the services.

It is best to find information about the social and service centers on the websites of the municipalities.

National Association of Senior Citizens

On the website of the National Association of Senior Citizens, you can find an overview of all member organisations in the country.

They often publish an overview on their pages about the main things in their operations. You can also find the program of service centers on their Facebook pages.

It is worth pointing out the various discounts offered to members of senior citizens' associations in return for presenting certificates.
