Protection of personal data online

It is important that we are aware of which information we choose to share on social media and the Internet in general. This applies to both information about ourselves and others – especially in the case of children or other individuals who cannot influence or monitor the sharing of information themselves.

Online security

Companies and organisations that collect and use your information are responsible for ensuring their security. However, there are some things you can do to protect yourself against the misuse of your personal data or ensure that your privacy is respected in a way that you choose.

How do I protect my personal data online?

You can take steps to protect your personal data online. Use the same reasoning as you would when you ask for personal information on paper or in person.

For example, you can consider:

  • Who is collecting information?

  • what will be done with them?

  • are they necessary?

  • what are the consequences for me?

Privacy policy and user terms

Check the company's privacy policy or user terms to find out what to do with your information. The privacy policy is a statement that tells you:

  • who is collecting your information,

  • to which they are to be used, and

  • whether they will be shared with others.

If your intentions are not clear, ask your company for more information before you give your personal information, especially if it is sensitive.

A company may want to use your personal information to send you marketing material or give your information to others for marketing purposes. You should be given the opportunity to decline or stop receiving such marketing material.

Good advice to improve safety

Everybody should be alert to online dangers such as identity theft, scam emails and unapproved sharing of information.

It is important that:

  • have strong passwords

  • be careful with what information is posted on the internet

  • read the terms before submitting personal data
