Who can run for president? Eligibility.

In order to run for president, a person must have reached the age of 35 and be an Icelandic citizen.

Establishment of an electronical endorsement collection

From 1st of March endorsements can be collected electronically.

To establish a collection of endorsements one must log in with Electronic ID.

Each candidate must turn in 1.500 – 3.000 endorsements, divided proportionally by the number of voters in each quarter of the country.

Only a candidate can establish a collection of endorsements. Once an endorsement collection has been established, a link can be copied for sharing to make it easier for voters to endorse a particular candidate.

To view the status of endorsements one has to log in to My pages at Ísland.is, select User Info - Lists - The collection of endorsements.

When a candidate turns in a notice of candidacy to the National Electoral Commission, he/shall shall state that endorsers have been collected electronically. The National Electoral Commission reviews the endorsements in the system.

Nomination deadline

The National Electoral Commission announces presidential elections no later than three months before election day. The election deadline shall expire at noon 36 days before election day. The deadline is at 12 o´clock on 26 April.

The National Electoral Commission shall rule on the validity of the nominees, but decisions may be referred to the Elections Complaints Committee.

The National Electoral Commission announces who is running for president 30 days before election day.

If only one person is running for president, he/she is duly elected President and no election takes place.
