Street closures in Reykjavík due to the Nordic Council meeting

From October 28 to 31, 2024, the Nordic Council Session will be held in Reykjavik.

he Session will take place in the Icelandic parliament, the Althing, and Reykjavík City Hall. The main theme for the Session this year is „Peace and Security in the Arctic“.

The Session is the largest Nordic political event of the year, bringing together 87 members of the Nordic Council, prime ministers, foreign ministers, inter-parliamentary co-operation ministers of the Nordic countries, and various other ministers from all Nordic countries. Additionally, a number of guests from countries outside the Nordic region will be in attendance and the total amount of guests who attends the Sessions will be around 600. The Icelandic government has specific obligations when hosting foreign heads of state. The security of foreign heads of state visiting the country is the responsibility of the Icelandic state. All vehicular and pedestrian traffic is prohibited within the restricted area in downtown Reykjavik. There will be heightened security in and around the restricted area while the Session is ongoing. The police will be responsible for security, and the officers involved will be armed during their duties.
