EDPB publishes statement on the data protection challenges of smart glasses
14th October 2026
The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has adopted a statement on the data protection challenges posed by smart glasses.

The statement provides preliminary guidance to users, manufacturers and service providers while raising awareness of the risks associated with these devices.
Smart glasses may include cameras and microphones that allow images and audio to be recorded without individuals being aware. The EDPB highlights the particular risks associated with their use in sensitive environments, such as hospitals, schools and workplaces, as well as the need to pay special attention to the protection of children.
The statement addresses, among other things, responsibility for processing personal data and the importance of transparency. The EDPB stresses that individuals should be clearly informed when recording takes place, for example through visible LED lights or audio signals. Users of smart glasses may themselves be considered data controllers, particularly when sharing images or videos on public social media accounts.
Alongside the statement, the EDPB has published an expert report examining the use of smart glasses and their implications for privacy.
