EDPB calls for legal basis for cross-regulatory information sharing

17th July 2026

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has called on the European Commission to propose a clear legal basis enabling regulators in different fields to share information, including confidential information, for enforcement purposes.

At its meeting in Dublin on 16 and 17 July, the Board also discussed ways to strengthen the consistent and effective enforcement of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Data Protection Authorities are facing a growing number of increasingly complex complaints, partly due to the expanding use of artificial intelligence, while their resources remain limited.

The Board considers that greater information sharing, joint operations and resource pooling could improve cooperation between authorities and strengthen GDPR enforcement, particularly in cases affecting large numbers of individuals. A series of workshops will also be organised to discuss enforcement procedures and exchange information on national practices.
