Allocation from the Icelandic Research Fund for the financial year 2026

12th February 2026

The Board of The Icelandic Research Fund has completed the allocation of grants for new research projects for 2026. A total of 414 valid applications were received, 70 of which were funded, or 17%.

The Icelandic Research Fund (IRF) is the leading competitive research fund in Iceland. The fund grants projects in all areas of science, from doctoral students grants to grants of excellence. Grants of excellence are awarded to major projects that excel in their field and have an international relevance. The Icelandic Research Fund (IRF) is under the perview of the ministry of culture-, innovation and higher education.

Grants for new projects amount is close to ISK 1.3 billion this year, but since projects are generally for three years, the total cost is almost ISK 3.8 billion in the years 2026-2028.

Below is an overview of the breakdown between grant types. Amounts may change as a result of contract negotiations.
