ISAC Becomes Full Member of ILAC and Subsequently GLOBAC

31st October 2025

ISAC recently achieved full membership in ILAC and has been approved as a member of GLOBAC, the new global accreditation body formed through the merger of ILAC and IAF. This marks a major milestone for Iceland's accreditation system and strengthens ISAC’s role in the international accreditation community.

On 25 August, ISAC was granted full membership in the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC). This achievement confirms that ISAC meets the international standards and requirements expected of accreditation bodies and represents a significant milestone in the development of accreditation in Iceland. The membership further strengthens the competitive position of Icelandic companies and institutions that rely on accreditation in an international context.

In recent months, work has been underway to merge ILAC and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) into a single global organisation, the Global Accreditation Cooperation (GLOBAC). In consultation with Icelandic authorities and other stakeholders, ISAC decided to apply for membership in the new organisation. ISAC’s application has been approved, and GLOBAC will formally commence operations on 1st January 2026.

The merger of ILAC and IAF into GLOBAC aims to harmonise procedures and strengthen the global accreditation recognition framework. With the establishment of GLOBAC, a foundation is laid for a simpler, more efficient and even more robust system of cooperation across laboratories, certification and inspection bodies, and other organisations working in the fields of accreditation and quality management.

ISAC’s membership in GLOBAC marks an important step in the continued development of accreditation in Iceland and reinforces the institution’s position on the international stage. As a full member, ISAC will gain the right to actively participate in the GLOBAC General Assembly, as well as in various committees and working groups. Full members also enjoy speaking and voting rights, ensuring direct involvement in strategy, policy development, and decision-making within the global accreditation community.

Membership ensures ISAC access to the latest international standards and best practices in accreditation and will support increased international recognition of Icelandic accreditations.

ISAC’s accession to GLOBAC is a key milestone in ensuring continued progress in accreditation activities in Iceland, enhancing the quality of ISAC’s services, and supporting the global competitiveness of Icelandic industry.
