Donor eligibility

  • Travelling outside Iceland, can affect donors eligibility to donate blood. Transmission of infectious agents by transfusion can be minimized by careful review of donors travel history.

  • The waiting period is necessary to ensure the safety of the blood recipient. These viruses can have a serious impact on frail people.

  • The Blood Bank's staff provides information on which countries/territories are considered to be risk areas, in regards to blood donation.

Exceptions and comments

  • Visit the website JPAC to check whether the country is classified as a risk area for bloodborne diseases and ask whether the blood donor was ill during the travel or shortly after returning home.

  • For travels to areas where malaria is endemic, deferral period for blood donation is 1 year. See detailed guidelines on Malaria: Malaria, How to interpret the colors on the malaria map - JAPC.

  • For travel to areas where tropical viral infections are endemic, deferral period for blood donation is 4 weeks after returning to Iceland, provided there are no symptoms of infection. See more information on each virus: Chikungunya - Dengue - Zika.

  • For travel to areas where Chagas disease (Trypanosoma cruzi) is endemic, deferral period for blood donation is 6 months. See detailed guidelines: Chagas.

Note: A stopover at an airport where the traveler does not leave the airport does not count as a stay in the country in question. Travel risks apply if the donor has travelled through a malaria area e.g. by car or train.

Note: Other countries can have expanded screening programs for infectious diseases. Therefore, there may be different rules for deferral between countries.
