Þjóhátóð Behind the Scenes

As in previous years, the staff of the Heilbrigðisstofnun Suðurlands in Vestmannaeyjar stood on duty throughout Þjóðhátíð, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of both residents and visitors through increased preparedness, strong staffing levels, and close cooperation with emergency response partners.
Unlike a typical weekend, when only one physician is on call, the primary healthcare centre remained open around the clock throughout the festival. Staffing relied on dedicated local personnel and HSU employees, supported by additional staff from Landspítali University Hospital. Among them was Hafdís, an emergency department nurse from Landspítali, who worked in the medical tent at Herjólfsdal for the third time.
In Herjólfsdalur, six HSU paramedics were on duty, supported by two ambulances stationed in the festival area. Radiology services were available throughout the weekend, and the laboratory operated extended hours to support patient care. Security personnel were present at reception 24 hours a day, while kitchen staff ensured that employees had access to refreshments and hot meals around the clock. Cleaning staff also played a vital role in maintaining a clean and welcoming environment despite the heavy foot traffic.
During the weekend, approximately 95 individuals sought care at the healthcare centre, while 52 people visited the medical tent. The vast majority of cases were successfully managed on-site, with only a small number requiring further assessment at the healthcare centre overnight.Daily coordination meetings were held with representatives from primary care services, the inpatient ward, police, ambulance services, ÍBV, security personnel, and the crisis support team. These meetings focused on reviewing the previous 24 hours, identifying lessons learned, and discussing opportunities to further enhance safety and service delivery.
Þjóðhátíð is a unique event that requires extensive planning, preparation, and collaboration. Behind a successful festival weekend lies months of meetings, logistical work, and careful coordination to ensure that sufficient supplies, staffing, and resources are in place. Since it is impossible to predict the level of demand in advance, thorough preparation is essential.
Þórunn Pálsdóttir, a nurse in Vestmannaeyjar, was one of those responsible for planning and coordinating healthcare operations throughout the weekend.
“There is always a special atmosphere that comes with working during Þjóðhátíð. Most people are in good spirits, and everyone works hard to do their very best. Many of us who are on duty are also preparing for the festival with our own families, and many take on additional volunteer roles for ÍBV during the weekend. By the time it is over, most of us are tired, but also proud of the teamwork and the job well done.”
