In this winter edition, Díana Óskarsdóttir, CEO of the South Iceland Healthcare Institution, writes:
“The first months of the year have been both eventful and productive for HSU. What stands out is not only the number of initiatives, but how clearly they reflect the strategy we have set for the period up to 2030. That strategy emphasizes progressive healthcare services, an attractive workplace, a strong culture of quality and safety, and responsible operations.
This strategy is not just words on paper or a screen. It is reflected in our daily work, in decisions made close to the front line, and in the wide range of projects led by HSU staff in recent months. In this winter edition of The Heart of HSU, we review our activities and key developments from December through March.
Care that meets people where they are
Our focus on progressive services has led to tangible improvements. The Home Hospital is a key example, demonstrating how we can bring services closer to patients, increase flexibility, and improve the patient experience.
At the same time, we have worked systematically on developing new service solutions where advanced technology and new approaches play an increasingly important role. Initiatives such as remote monitoring illustrate how we can strengthen continuity of care and respond earlier to patient needs, without increasing the burden on traditional service units.
The continued development and strengthening of primary healthcare in the region, including significantly improved public access to services in the Uppsveitir area, further underlines this vision: that healthcare services should be accessible, coordinated, and based on the needs of the community at any given time.
People drive progress
Successful operations are built on strong and capable staff. In recent months, it has become even clearer how much strength lies within our workforce, particularly through the many improvement initiatives that have emerged from within.
We have placed increased emphasis on a workplace culture where dialogue, trust, and participation are at the forefront. This includes greater visibility of projects, more targeted communication, and increased opportunities for staff to influence and engage in the development of our operations.
This approach not only strengthens job satisfaction but also improves the quality of care. When professionals collaborate across units and share knowledge, stronger outcomes are achieved.
Quality, safety, and structured development
The establishment of a new professional council at the beginning of 2026 marked an important step toward more structured decision-making and a stronger professional foundation. It enhances alignment, supports development, and ensures that decisions are based on the best available knowledge.
At the same time, strong emphasis has been placed on safety, both in clinical practice and in the handling of information. Recognition received by HSU for achievements in cybersecurity is a clear indication that these efforts are delivering results and strengthening trust.
We are also seeing increased focus on improving internal processes, where automation and better use of data support efficiency and quality. Such developments are essential for systematically improving services.
Green light for the future
Healthcare services face ever-changing challenges, not least due to population growth and evolving societal needs. This calls for responsible operations and clear prioritization.
The green light from health authorities for extensive development and renovation of HSU facilities in Selfoss marks a major milestone. This project will create better conditions for both staff and patients and is key to meeting growing demand for healthcare services in the region.
Alongside this, we continue to strengthen infrastructure, develop working methods, and build services that are better equipped for the future.
Looking ahead
Reviewing the past months, it is clear that HSU is on a well-defined path. The work carried out reflects ambition, professionalism, and a strong commitment to continuous improvement. We are a technology-oriented healthcare institution, constantly seeking opportunities to apply digital solutions and improved processes to increase productivity and efficiency, ease the workload for staff, enhance patient safety, and improve services wherever possible.
It is increasingly clear that there are many opportunities ahead. With continued collaboration, a clear strategy, and a strong workforce, we are well positioned to meet them and to continue building a healthcare system that the community can trust.
Finally, I would like to thank HSU staff for their invaluable contribution, our partners for excellent collaboration, and the residents of this largest healthcare region in Iceland for their trust.”
