The Lions Club of Selfoss has donated funds to the Emergency Department of HSU for the purchase of an Inmu Relax pillow. This pillow is a sensory stimulation device that combines music with deep vibrations.
The pillow transforms patients’ movements into soothing music, thereby helping them relax. It is especially beneficial for individuals suffering from anxiety, dementia, or delirium.
Delirium is a syndrome that can occur in individuals and is characterized by disturbances in attention, awareness, cognitive function, and perception. It is a temporary condition and can, for example, arise during illness or upon hospital admission. Patients in emergency departments are particularly at risk of developing delirium.
The pillow has proven highly effective for patients on the ward and has, among other things, helped a patient recover from temporary panic-related anxiety who otherwise would have needed sedative medication. With the use of the pillow, the patient became calm and was able to fall asleep, says Kolbrún Gunnarsdóttir, Head of the Emergency Department.
