The Healthcare Institution of South Iceland

“It is so rewarding to follow people through their journey and see them get better.”

Íris Óskarsdóttir is a newly graduated family physician working at the health center in Selfoss. She recently completed her specialization in family medicine and describes the job as both varied and fulfilling, where no two days are alike.

She says that the diversity and the connection with patients are what she finds most appealing about the profession.
“I have always been very interested in preventive work and in being able to respond early to diseases,” she says, adding that she tries to follow her own advice. Íris goes to the gym up to five times a week to lift weights and pays close attention to her diet. She is also a physician in the health and lifestyle project Strong Kids at the health center.

Íris is from Selfoss and was born in the maternity ward there. She always knew she wanted to become a doctor and says that both her studies and work experience at the South Iceland Healthcare Institution have been extremely positive.
“It’s really fun to work at HSU. The job is diverse, the colleagues are fantastic, and the supervision is excellent,” she says. According to Íris, the main challenges in family medicine are related to workload—high time pressure and too much paperwork on top of an understaffed team of family doctors.

Her original plan was to go into internal medicine, but after working at HSU as a student, she quickly realized that being a family doctor was more enjoyable—and there was no turning back.
“It is so rewarding to get to know entire families and follow people throughout their lives—seeing them recover or keeping chronic conditions stable for as long as possible.”

Íris describes working at HSU as exceptionally enjoyable and thrives in her role at the health center:
“There is a great atmosphere here, wonderful people, and varied tasks. It’s truly an excellent work environment.”
