Innovation and Technological Advancements within HSU
10th September 2026
The recent Innovation Day clearly demonstrated the drive, ambition, and innovative spirit that exist within the South Iceland Health Institution (HSU). The diversity of the projects presented, the strong staff participation, and the high level of engagement throughout the day reflected HSU’s commitment to being at the forefront of healthcare development in the years ahead.
Gunnar Thorarensen, Chief Medical Officer of Digital Health, opened the programme and introduced the work of Digital Health, a newly established centre for development and innovation within the healthcare system.
He began the day by praising HSU for its achievements in healthcare innovation, noting that “people have taken notice of what is happening in South Iceland,” the Chief Medical Officer said in his opening remarks.
The programme was diverse and generated considerable interest among attendees. Presentations on the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare attracted particular attention, showcasing examples of how the technology is being utilized in primary care reception services, nursing homes, and diagnostic imaging in emergency departments. It became clear that innovation at HSU has already demonstrated improvements in the efficient use of staff time and enhanced patient safety.
During the day’s addresses, it was emphasized that innovation is not an end in itself, but rather a means of improving services, strengthening professional practice, and responding to the changing needs of society. HSU’s staff are the driving force behind this development, and their ideas form the foundation for the institution’s future growth and progress.
The diversity of the projects presented, the strong participation of staff, and the high level of engagement from attendees send a clear message that HSU intends to remain at the forefront of healthcare development in Iceland in the years ahead.
Díana Óskarsdóttir, CEO of HSU, said that innovation is part of her staff’s DNA.
“It is truly rewarding to have the opportunity to share HSU’s exciting journey with the community. I would like to thank all of our staff who participated in today’s programme and shared their knowledge and experience with us. It is through sharing, learning from one another, and having the courage to try new approaches that we continue to evolve. We have every reason to be proud of the excellent work that takes place here every day.”
