A Symbolic Gift to the Oncology Department

3rd September 2026

The Árnessýsla Cancer Society presented HSU’s Oncology Department with a beautiful bell, which will hold a special place in the outpatient clinic.

Guðbjörg Hjaltadóttir and Erla G Sigurjónsdóttir

Ringing the bell at the end of cancer treatment marks the close of one chapter and the beginning of the next.

The bell is intended for individuals who have completed their cancer treatment. Upon completion of their final treatment, patients are given the opportunity to ring the bell in the outpatient clinic alongside the healthcare professionals who have supported them throughout their journey, often for several months and sometimes even years.

This symbolic moment often provides tremendous emotional strength and gives patients the opportunity to share the occasion with family members and the staff who have accompanied them through their treatment journey.

The Árnessýsla Cancer Society hopes that the bell will serve as a reminder of resilience, courage, and hope, while giving those who have completed treatment the opportunity to celebrate this important milestone.
