The issuance of journeyman's certificates goes to the district commissioner in South Iceland
18th November 2024
The issuance of journeyman's certificates has been transferred to the office of the district commissioner in the South of Iceland, and the changes will take effect on January 1, 2025. This follows an amendment to law no. 42/1978 on craftsmanship, which aimed to reduce the issuance of licenses in the central administration of the public sector, thereby allowing more room for actual policy work within the ministry.
Alongside this, work is being done to make information about all journeyman's exams available online, and a large portion of the data can already be found on Ísland.is. Additionally, information about individuals with a foreign background who have been recognized to work in a trade here in the country will be accessible.
The amendment to the craftsmanship act took effect at the beginning of 2024, but since the turn of the century, the issuance of journeyman's certificates has been in the hands of the Minister of Industry.
