Efficient work on the digital implementation of housing purchases in Grindavík
16th October 2024
District commissioners were tasked with overseeing the digital implementation of the project, which enabled residents of Grindavík to sell their housing to the government under certain conditions. Applicants could subsequently fill out an application on Ísland.is.
Ever since the volcanic eruptions at Sundhnúksgígar began north of Grindavík in late 2023, the town's residents have faced a changed reality. The town was evacuated, and significant property damage occurred to buildings and infrastructure. Subsequently, the government took over the housing loans of many residents, and numerous property owners received 95% of the fire insurance value, minus loans, and could use their equity to purchase housing elsewhere.
It is safe to say that a lot of work was done in a short amount of time. The digital journey began on February 23, 2024, and the first application was ready by March 8. Over 200 applications were received on the first day and were processed without issues for the owners. The first purchases were completed on April 12, and the first deeds were ready by June 25. By September 27, 888 purchase agreements had been registered, and 676 deeds had been issued for housing purchases in Grindavík
