Contracts for non-local work in rural areas
8th December 2024
Notification from the Government of Iceland
Director of the Icelandic Regional Development Agency Arnar Már Elíasson and Director of the Directorate of Immigration Kristín Völundardóttir signed agreements yesterday on grants for non-local work. On one hand, there is a job that will be located in the premises of the District Commissioner in Húsavík and on the other hand, a job that will be located in the workplace cluster Útibúið in Hvammstangi. The agreements were signed in Húsavík.
The agreements are made on the basis of the regional plan, action B.7 on non-local jobs. The aim of the action is to promote freedom of residence through the increase of employment opportunities and increased diversity of jobs in the countryside. The action means that government agencies that are based in the capital area can apply for grants for new jobs outside the area or jobs that will be moved from the capital area from 1 November 2024. Grants are intended to cover travel costs and renting facilities in workplace clusters. A grant may be granted to an institution for a job for up to three years. The maximum support for each job may be two million ISK per year.
The grants were announced in October. The contracts signed yesterday are the first, but three other jobs have also been approved. They are the job of archivist at the National Archives of Iceland, located in Neskaupstaður, the job of lawyer at the Environmental and Natural Resources Committee, located in Suðurnes, and the job of specialist at the Directorate of Health, located in Akranes.
