How do I book an appointment with the District Commissioner?
It varies by service area whether it is necessary to book an appointment.
You do not need to book an appointment for general services such as:
Applications for and issuance of driver’s licenses.
Submission and pickup of documents for registration (Þinglýsing).
Pickup of prepared documents regarding family and estate matters.
For the Social Insurance Administration (Tryggingastofnun) and Iceland Health (Sjúkratryggingar) (only for agencies outside the capital area).
Photos/applications for passports and ID cards
At the District Commissioner of the capital area in Kópavogur, you can book an appointment through Noona.is. You may also show up without an appointment, but waiting times may be longer.
At other offices, it is not necessary to book an appointment for passports and ID cards
You do not need to book an appointment to pick up a new passport.
It is not possible to apply for passports or ID cards or take photos at the District Commissioner’s offices in Búðardalur and Þórshöfn, or at locations with limited staff presence (Dalvík, Raufarhöfn, and Hvammstangi). Applicants may go to any District Commissioner office that suits them best for passport and ID card applications and photos, regardless of residency.
