The 2024 Annual Report on Communicable Disease Control and Prevention
30th June 2025
The Chief Epidemiologist has published the 2024 Annual Report on Communicable Disease Control and Prevention.

The Annual Report covers notifiable diseases, pathogens, and events, including serious health consequences caused by toxic chemicals and radioactive substances, as per the Act on Health Security and Communicable Diseases.
The main communicable diseases monitored by the Chief Epidemiologist are reviewed and their frequency compared with epidemiology in recent years. The Chief Epidemiologist closely monitored frequent volcanic eruptions during the year, especially with regard to possible gas pollution. Nordic and international co-operation was strong, and several projects were funded by the European Union to strengthen monitoring and preparedness for acute public health threats.
The Chief Epidemiologist also organizes general vaccinations and is responsible for registering them. In addition, the Chief Epidemiologist keeps a record of human use of antibiotics that can cause resistance to antibiotics. These issues are discussed in more detail in special annual reports that come from the Chief Epidemiologist later in the year.
The Annual report is only available in electronic format.
