A new issue of Talnabrunnur has been published. This issue focuses on mental health, sleep, stress, financial difficulties, loneliness, happiness, and overall well-being among adults in Iceland in 2024, in comparison to 2022 and 2023.
There has been little change in adults’ well-being in recent years. A higher proportion now report difficulties making ends meet, while fewer men consider themselves happy. Two-thirds of adults rate their mental health as good (67%) and report getting sufficient sleep (68%). Just over half (53%) describe themselves as very happy, 27% experience high levels of stress, and 11% often feel lonely. Approximately 17% report a high level of overall well-being.
Proportionally, more women than men report experiencing high stress and financial difficulties. However, a higher share of women also consider themselves very happy. Younger people generally report poorer well-being than older people – they rate their mental health lower, are more likely to experience loneliness, and report less overall well-being.
The well-being and resilience of the younger generation are essential for the prosperity of society. It is therefore important to consider ways to promote young people’s mental health, strengthen their social connections, and support overall well-being.
The authors of the article are Andrea Gerður Dofradóttir og Sigrún Daníelsdóttir.
