Respiratory infections. Weeks 16 and 17 2024

The latest summary examines the occurrence of respiratory infections and hospitalizations in Iceland during weeks 16 and 17, with a look at the situation in Europe.
Influenza continues to circulate steadily, although the number of cases has varied in recent weeks. Presently, there are few new diagnoses of COVID-19 and RSV.
In week 16, 23 patients were hospitalized at Landspitali Hospital with influenza, marking the highest weekly total for the entire winter season. Overall, 36 hospitalized patients at Landspitali in week 16 received a respiratory virus diagnosis. Week 17 saw 23 hospitalized patients with respiratory virus infections, including eight cases of influenza.
Over the past four weeks, 16 individuals aged between 2 and 39 years were diagnosed with pertussis (whooping cough), primarily in the capital area. These are the first cases of pertussis reported in Iceland since 2019.
Additionally, two isolated cases of measles were recently diagnosed, marking the first instances in Iceland since 2019, with no subsequent spread reported.
