In the World Health Organization's Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030, countries are encouraged to follow a patient safety curriculum in the education of healthcare professionals. The WHO published guidelines in 2011 that identify 11 key elements of patient safety knowledge and skills. The Nordic framework is based on these guidelines but has been adapted to Nordic conditions and updated with additional issues that characterize health care in the Nordic countries, such as the ageing of the population, strong digital development in the health system and the widespread use of high-tech solutions for diagnosis and treatment.
The Nordic framework has been published in a report on the Nordic Council of Ministers website. The report consists of two parts. The first part of the report contains a brief literature review, a summary of best practices of patient safety education, and a review of patient safety education in the Nordics. In addition, it presents eight joint position statements from the participating Nordic authorities. The second part of the report is the framework itself, which discusses 15 competence areas for patient safety.
