In the spring of 2025, the Directorate of Health conducted a surveillance audit of Westfjords Healthcare Institution (HVest). The audit was part of the Directorate's routine supervision, but it was also prompted by reports of staffing shortages among doctors at HVest.

Representatives from the Directorate visited HVest in May and June 2025, during which they inspected the hospital premises and the primary healthcare clinic in Ísafjörður, as well as the primary healthcare clinic and the nursing and inpatient ward in Patreksfjörður. The Directorate's representatives interviewed HVest staff in Ísafjörður and Patreksfjörður.

The Directorate issues both suggestions and recommendations to HVest. The suggestions promote professional development and a safety culture. The Directorate's recommendations specify that HVest must carry out an annual quality assessment and ensure that the necessary professional expertise is available to maintain the services the hospital is expected to provide.

The Directorate of Health will monitor the aforementioned recommendations and suggestions.
