The Chief Epidemiologist organizes and coordinates communicable disease control and vaccinations in Iceland, i.e. by publishing guidelines in the event of epidemics. The Chief Epidemiologist is also responsible for the prevention of infections and for monitoring the use of antibiotics, which can contribute to the spread of resistant pathogens.
