Application system

The Ísland.is application system is a powerful tool for moving applications for government services to a user-friendly digital interface.

Table of contents

The system is designed to handle all the main types of applications for government services and thus harmonise the user experience across organisations. The system supports the delivery of self-service, but also allows users to monitor their application progress in one place, wherever and at any time on My pages on Ísland.is

Benefits for government agencies

The system is suitable for all organisations and municipalities that provide services to the public and want to increase self-service for individuals and companies in a user-friendly and accessible interface.

Investment in technical infrastructure, design and accessibility is being shared for the benefit of all government agencies and municipalities at the same time.

The benefits for government services are:

  • simplified service procedures

  • better informed users

  • more automation

  • more time for staff to provide more complex services

Responsibility and ownership of services transferred to the application system remains with the service provider. The internal system and the interface of Island.is is the main tool for implementation.

Examples of applications

The Ísland.is application system is designed to cover all types of public applications and services. Examples of different categories that the application system can handle:

What does a government agency have to do?

The government agency starts its digital journey by applying for collaboration with Ísland.is Digital Iceland receives the application and assesses whether the agency can simply implement the application or whether a team needs to be formed to implement the application in digital manner.

Digital Iceland emphasises an integrated approach to all analytical work. To move an application into the application system, the service is examined, the purpose of the process defined, access to data accessed and whether the flow can be simplified for the user.

The process step by step

  1. The government agency carries out an initial analysis of the most relevant application processes for the agency and the users.

  2. The agency prepares a project proposal (a product manager at Digital Iceland can assist) and submits it through a collaborative application.

  3. The project is reviewed by Digital Iceland.

  4. If the project is approved, a project group is formed, comprising a representative and a team from Digital Iceland, together with the owner of the process and experts at the government agency.

  5. The process is then taken into a design sprint where the process is dissected, the data process mapped and a prototype presented to the group.

  6. The application is then installed in the application system and published on Island.is.

  7. Promotional and marketing material prepared and opened for applications.

The role of Digital Iceland

The role is to provide expertise in service design, accessibility, software development and the operation of the technical environment to assist government agencies in simplifying their processes and publish them on Ísland.is.
