The licence list is open to all

One of the main roles of the Directorate of Health is to supervise health services and healthcare professionals. As part of this monitoring, licences are granted to licensed healthcare professions, as only those who hold a valid licence from the Medical Director of Health are permitted to work as healthcare practitioners and provide healthcare services.

One of the main roles of the Directorate of Health is to supervise health services and healthcare professionals. As part of this monitoring, licences are granted to licensed healthcare professions, as only those who hold a valid licence from the Directorate of Health are permitted to work as healthcare practitioners and provide healthcare services.

In the health professional register, all healthcare practitioners in Iceland with a valid licence can be found. The licences register is open to all and it is therefore possible to ensure that the person providing health services has the required licence from the Directorate of Health. If a healthcare practitioner waives a licence, e.g. due to illness, or is deprived of it, his/her name is removed from the licence list and the name of the person in question does not appear on the search. From time to time, inquiries are made regarding individual licences, so the Directorate of Health wants to draw attention to the licence list.
