Summons in the Digital Mailbox
Last week, the first digital indictment was issued for traffic violations and in the following weeks, the first summon was sent through the Digital Mailbox.
Last week, the first-ever-electronic-indictment was issued for-traffic-law-breaking-and, in-between-the-indictments, the first-ever-electronic-indictment was published in the Icelandic Digital Mailbox.
Charges and publications regarding traffic violations are now displayed in the Digital Personal Mailbox on Ísland.is where it is possible to confirm the receipt of the data. In cases where this does not work, police have now simultaneously adopted a smart application to publish charges in person to individuals. Similarly, individuals can follow their court cases on Ísland.is’ My pages under a new category Law and Order.
This development was made possible by the amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act, which was adopted this summer.
Charges and records have been transferred to paper between individuals and institutions. The goal of this journey is to stop moving people and paper and make data more accessible by digital means when needed. This will lead to lower legal costs, shorter procedural time, a lower carbon footprint, and increased transparency for all parties.
All charges are being moved to electronic form, and not just for traffic violations. The Ministry of Justice led the project in close cooperation with Digital Iceland.
By the end of 2024, all public entities will have started publishing important data and documents of individuals and companies in the Digital Mailbox. The Digital Mailbox can be found on My pages on Ísland.is and in the Ísland.is app.
The digital mailbox with My pages on Ísland.is are constantly evolving to simplify people’s lives and improve access to important and current information that can be found in the government.
