Law on the Special Commission for the District of Grindavík adopted by the Icelandic parliament, Althingi
The Executive Committee will officially take office on 1 June, when the Act will take effect. Preparations for the Committee's work have already begun and its composition will be announced shortly.
Althingi approved today the Minister of Infrastructure's draft law on a special executive committee on the issues of Grindavíkurbær. The Executive Committee will officially begin work on June 1st. when the law comes into force. Preparations for the work of the committee have already begun and its composition will be announced shortly.
The executive committee will manage, plan and coordinate actions, ensure efficient cooperation with the local government and public bodies, and have an overall overview of Grindavíkur town's affairs. The project has been prepared in good cooperation with the town council of Grindavík, who requested cooperation on arrangements and governance arrangements for projects under unusual conditions due to ground disturbances in Grindavík.
Svandís Svavarsdóttir, Minister of Infrastructure: "It is very important that Alþingi has now approved the law on the establishment of an executive committee on the issues of Grindavík. In this way, the involvement of the state is made clearer than it has been so that increased results are achieved. This is a significant step in our efforts to care for the residents of Grindavík and support the community and the residents of Grindavík for the future."
More about the executive committee
The executive committee is a multi-member and independent government body that has a multi-faceted task in its hands that deals with resolution issues related to the earthquakes at Grindavík. The committee's main tasks will be community service by operating a service team in the field of welfare and school services and the construction and repair of important infrastructure in Grindavík.
