Job in the Surveillance Division

The Directorate of Fisheries is looking to hire fisheries inspectors for 1-2 full-time positions in the Surveillance Division.

The Directorate of Fisheries is looking for ambitious, independent, positive and driven individuals with experience and interest in the fishing industry to work at the organization's location in Hafnarfjörður.

The Directorate of Fisheries focuses on digital and electronic solutions, analyzing and risk assessment for more effective monitoring, and work at the surveillance division at the Directorate of Fisheries is extremely varied and no day is the same. Inspectors job includes general surveillance work at sea, on land and office work such as preparation of surveillance reports and electronic surveillance.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Surveillance at sea. It includes among other things, inspections of various ships and boats, including two surveillance trips per year with processing vessel. Also measuring the length of fish and making proposals for closure of fishing areas, surveillance of catch composition, fishing gear, proportion of small fish in catch and discarding of catches.

  • Surveillance at land. It includes among other things including supervision of landings, supervision of weighing and recording of catches at harbor scales and with weighing license holders, supervision of fishing gear and catch composition, length measurements of catches and supervision of entry of catch books. Surveillance of lands of foreign ships and assessments of products of processing ships. Surveillance of salmon and trout fishing, collection of materials in fishing lakes as well as office work, reporting when field work ends, monitoring of landings and registrations in the catch registration system of the Directorate of Fisheries, together with the collection of data for infringement cases that arise.

  • Electronic surveillance. Data analysis and development.

  • Surveillance flights with remote controlled aircraft.

  • Other projects in the organization's field of work.

Qualification requirements

  • Education that is useful for the work.

  • Very good general computer skills.

  • Good Icelandic skills.

  • Good English skills and/or Nordic languages is an advantage.

  • Analytical and numeracy skills.

  • Solid experience and knowledge of jobs in the fishing industry.

  • Knowledge and experience of seamanship is an advantage.

  • Good health compare to the health requirements of the Directorate of Fisheries.

  • Independence, professionalism and precision in working methods.

  • Fairness and tact.

  • Very good teamwork and communication skills are required.

  • Clean criminal record.
