Information for citizenship applicants to Althingi

Legislation has been passed in Althingi concerning the granting of citizenship.

Alþingi

The Althingi passed the resolution on 13 June last, but the law will not take effect until the day after its publication in the official journal.

The Directorate of Immigration does not have information on when the Act will be published this time, but comparable legislation has recently been published four to six weeks after it was passed by the Althingi. The Act is likely not to take effect until after mid-July.

Once the Act has taken effect, the Directorate of Immigration prepares nationality letters for those applicants who were granted Icelandic citizenship and sends them to the National Registry. They may take a few days to register as Icelandic citizens in the National Registry but firstly apply for an Icelandic passport .

Althingi shall send a letter of refusal to those who were not granted Icelandic citizenship. Decisions on granting were entirely made by the Althingi and the Directorate of Immigration cannot answer why a particular applicant was not granted Icelandic citizenship.
