The new fishing year begins on September 1st. Regulation on commercial fishing in the fishing year 2023/2024 and the calendar year 2024 were published in the Government Gazette on 14th of August 2023.

Allocation

Catch quota will be allocated to vessels that have catch shares in species that follow the fishing year but in shared stocks at the end of the year. Notices about the allocation of catch quotas will be sent to the digital mailboxes of fishing companies on Ísland.is.

Catch quota transfers

The Directorate of Fisheries draws attention to the fact that in the first six months of the new fishing year it will be possible to move the catch quota between vessels for both the 2022/2023 fishing year and the 2023/2024 fishing year. Transfers made in the electronic transfer systems until September 16th are valid for the catch quota allocated for the fishing year 2022/2023.

Note

  • Catch transfers that should be valid for a new fishing year must be sent to millifaerslur@fiskistofa.is on the appropriate form depending on whether it is a transfer of hook-and-line catch quota or catch qouta.

  • A fee is charged for the catch quota transfer in accordance with the organization's service fees.

  • As of September 16th, it will be possible to transfer the catch quota through the electronic system for the fishing year 2023/2024.

  • It must be stated on a form sent to the Directorate of Fisheries whether the catch quota transfer should take effect in the year 2022/2023 or 2023/2024.
