Courses on plant health at university level
Brynja Hrafnkelsdóttir, an expert at Land and Forest, will be leading a four-ECT module on the health of plants, which will start on 21 August at the Icelandic Agricultural University’s Re-Education Programme.
The course delves into the detrimental effects of non-organic environmental elements, particularly emphasising frost damage. Participants gain valuable insights into the realm of microorganisms and arthropods that pose threats to plants, as well as the consequences of these pests on plant life and the inherent defense mechanisms employed by plants to combat them.
The course will also include the study of biodefense in the form of beneficial microorganisms and arthropods. The second part of the course will focus on the detrimental effects of diseases and pests on various plant species and genera, with an emphasis on important cultivation plant species and their genera. The impact on plant propagation and growing will be analysed, and relevant laws and regulations pertaining to plant health will be examined.
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the environmental factors and organisms that impact plant health. Additionally, it enables students to identify the causes and common damage affecting the primary crops cultivated in Iceland.
The course is conducted through distance learning, complemented by two in-person sessions. The commencement date is Wednesday, August 21st, and the conclusion date is Wednesday, October 2nd.
