Basic course in Forestry
There are still a few openings for applicants to enroll in a foundational course in Forestry offered by the Reeducation Division of the Agricultural University of Iceland. This course is specifically designed for individuals seeking to enhance their knowledge and understanding of forestry practices. The program spans seven weeks and is conducted through distance learning, incorporating two interactive sessions and practical exercises on site.
This course provides an introduction to the subject area and the historical context of forestry and land reclamation practices in Iceland. It explores forestry as a discipline, examining the current state of forests globally and specifically within Iceland.
The primary goals of forestry, the parties involved in its practice, and the predominant tree species employed in forestry and tree cultivation in Iceland will be examined during the course. Additionally, it delves into the introduction to land reclamation measures, the ecological elements of forests, and comparisons between natural forests and forested areas. Finally, it explores the role of forestry as a countermeasure in the fight against climate change.
Upon completion of the course, students will possess a comprehensive understanding of the current state of forests in Iceland and globally. They will have acquired a thorough overview of the historical development of forests and forestry practices in Iceland. Students will be familiar with key professional concepts in forestry and land reclamation. They will be able to identify the origins and characteristics of various tree species and recognise the primary tree species cultivated in Iceland. Additionally, students will gain an understanding of the intricate relationship between forestry and climate.
The course comprises theoretical and practical components, with mandatory attendance required for the practical sessions, which span two course days. During these practical sessions, field trips and visits to professionals in the field will be conducted. Additionally, lectures will be made accessible on Teams for students' convenience.
In the evaluation of the course, project work constitutes 40% of the final grade, homework assignments contribute 50%, and the tree type analysis test accounts for the remaining 10%.
The course is on a BS-level and is rated to four ECTS-points. The course starts on Monday 19 August and ends on Thursday 3 October. The schedule and further information can be accessed here.
The teachers are Jóhanna Bergrún Ólafsdottir, Faculty of Forestry Head and Assistant Professor of Agricultural Sciences at the Agricultural University of Iceland, Professor Ása Aradóttir, Professor Bjarni Diðrik Sigurðsson and Professor Ólafur Eggertsson.
