A ceremony to allocate funds from the Public Health Fund was held Friday 24 February at the premises of the National Olympic and Sports Association Iceland. Willum Þór Þórsson, Minister of Health, allocated over 86 million ISK in grants from the Public Health Fund for 150 projects and research. Diverse projects were supported across the country, for all age groups. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the promotion of mental health for children and adults and the promotion of social skills, as well as the reduction of loneliness. Emphasis was also placed on alcohol, substance, and tobacco prevention, nutrition, exercise, and sexual health. Evaluation of applications also focused on projects that support minorities, health equity, and focus on innovation in the fields of prevention and health promotion.
The Minister allocated the grants upon receiving the proposals from the board of the Public Health Fund, which evaluated applications based on how they fit into the role of the Fund. Previously, the professional Public Health Councils evaluated all applications received. The Directorate of Health handles the day-to-day administration and accounting of the Public Health Fund.
