Only persons duly authorized by the department may act as intermediaries for the purchase, sale and exchange of immovable property or for the registration of ships for others.
The provincial capital oversees the approval of real estate and shipping agents nationwide.
Cost
The permit costs 11,000 ISK and must be paid into the office’s account: 322-26-0001, kennitala 650914-2520.
Conditions
To be authenticated, the person must:
have a legal residence in Iceland
be legal
have completed 90 unit training programmes designed for estate and shipping agents
lodge a guarantee to cover compensation and costs for any damages he may cause to his customers
have been engaged in a full-time position in real estate for 6 months in the 5 years preceding the application for approval
He shall not:
have been bankrupt (the condition may be waived upon obtaining consultation of the Real Estate Board of Supervisors if the claimant has had custody of his/her money for at least the last 3 years)
have been suspended from the right to work as a real estate agent indefinitely. The condition may be waived upon being heard by the Realtor's Board of Supervisors if the applicant has had custody of his or her money for at least the past 3 years.

The application must include:
statement by the professional indemnity insurance undertaking
photocopy of diploma
Note that it is not sufficient to return a digital residence certificate as this does not state the residence history of the person. It therefore has to consult the relevant district court to be issued with a residence certificate.
Appeal deadline
The department's decisions may be appealed to the Department for Employment and Innovation within three months of receipt.
