Certain public authorities may directly turn to the Director of Public Prosecutions and request a criminal record for individuals if they have legal interests in obtaining the information.
What information does the criminal record show authorities?
Violation of the criminal law.
Violation of traffic law if the penalty exceeds 150 000 ISK, imprisonment, probation, postponed indictment or suspended rights.
Violation of specific criminal laws if the penalty exceeds 100 000 ISK, imprisonment, probation, postponed indictment or suspended rights.
Violations when the outcome of a case has a recurring effect on subsequent violations.
Exceptions
The criminal record does not reveal the following information to the authorities if 10 years have passed since:
Imprisonment, probation or mandated community service.
Measures according to the general criminal law, for example, placement in a healthcare facility or a rehabilitation center.
End of suspension or reinstated drivers license.
Final judgment if the above exceptions are not applicable.
