Contact shielding and X-rays information for patients
Applications of x-rays in diagnostic radiology require guidelines on the usage of patient contact shielding. There is a long-standing tradition for patient contact shielding in such applications; however, in recent years the consensus in the radiology community has started to shift in this matter. The overall recommendation is to not use patient contact shielding in diagnostic radiology, except in exceptional circumstances. It is not recommended to use patient contact shielding for the gonads, embryo/fetus, breast or the lens of the eye. Patient contact shielding may be used for the thyroid during dental imaging, although it is not specifically recommended to do so.
