Cash sickness benefits is paid to the mother for 10 days after birth in the home.

How do you receive cash sickness benefits?

To receive paid sickness benefit you must apply for sickness benefit and submit a midwife certificate for home birth.

Applications are made electronically in the application button above. Otherwise, the signature must be submitted on the application to Iceland Health or the district commissioner outside the capital area.

It is easy to attach the certificate to an electronic application when applying. No original, scanned documents or clear images are needed.

Preconditions for payments

To receive approved sickness compensation for home birth, you must:

  • have given birth in a home birth

  • be insured in Iceland

  • be 16 years or older

  • have legal domicile in Iceland

Amounts and periods

The fee is paid for 10 days, with child support for children under 18 years on the applicant's cargo.

Note that sickness benefit is taxable. If you wish to use a personal tax credit, you must register the use of a tax card. Iceland Health employees are not allowed to register a tax card for the applicant

Application processing time

Applications are processed as soon as possible and in the order in which they are received. Current waiting periods are typically:

  • 4 - 6 weeks for new applications

  • 1 week or less from the receipt of the data requested
