This programme prepares students to teach art and design subjects in Icelandic compulsory schools. The programme is open to anyone who has completed a BEd degree in general teacher education specialising in art and design, or a BA/BS degree in a related subject.

Certified compulsory school teachers may apply for the programme regardless of specialisation in previous studies.

What is the study about?

This programme is aimed at students who want to pursue general teacher education with a focus on design and woodwork, visual arts, drama, textiles and music.

Programme structure

The programme is 120 ECTS and is organised as two years of full-time study or up to four years of part-time study.

Specialisations

Students choose between the following specialisations based on their academic background:

  • Design and woodwork following BEd degree

  • Visual arts: Art education following BEd degree

  • Performing arts following BEd degree

  • Textiles and design following BEd degree

  • Music education following BEd degree

  • Design and woodwork following BA/BS degree

  • Visual arts: Art education following BA/BS degree

  • Performing arts following BA/BS degree

  • Textiles and design following BA/BS degree

  • Music education following BA/BS degree

  • Teaching art and design for licensed teachers

Please note that when applying for a specialisation following an undergraduate degree, the applicant must specify whether they have completed a BEd or BA/BS degree.
