ISCED classification: 0215

KEY PHRASE

The programme provides a comprehensive professional and progressive teaching in acting and graduates open-minded and creative actors who possess the techniques and knowledge required in the contemporary performing arts environment.

ABOUT THE STUDY

The acting programme is a three-year program of 180 credits that ends with a bachelor's degree in performing arts.

The programme provides students with a diverse approach to the actor’s art. Emphasis is placed on training the body, voice and creative thinking using the methods and techniques of performing arts. In the programme, students learn the theory of the actor and art history with an emphasis on performing arts.

Students meet technical, ideological and artistic challenges that prepare them for work in the actor's professional field and/or continuing education.

STUDY STRUCTURE

The foundations of the acting programme are acting, practical techniques and theory, in addition to which students are gradually given an insight into the professional environment of performing arts. In acting courses, students acquire skills and knowledge in different methods of acting. In technical courses; voice acting, movement and singing are taught, which support and are woven into all the actor's work. In academic courses, students gain knowledge and understanding of the historical and social context of performing arts, increase their awareness of the profession and the actor's mission to the audience and society.

Acting studies emphasize students' creativity, critical thinking and open-mindedness. In the programme, drama is brought into conversation with contemporary and other art forms, which gives students the opportunity for collaboration and conversation with students from other study programmes at the school.

The performing arts department has good cooperation with both national and foreign art institutions, festivals and independent artists.

Students complete their studies with a graduation project and a final thesis.

AFTER GRADUATION

Students who have completed acting studies at IUA have created opportunities for themselves to work as actors in professional theatres and the independent performing arts scene both in Iceland and abroad. The programme also prepares students well for continuing studies at master's level.
