Digital driving licence only valid in Iceland

Since digital driving licences were made available in Iceland in the spring of 2020, 133 thousand individuals have downloaded them for their smartphones. The digital driving licence is now widely distributed in Iceland and just over 50% of drivers who are in total 260 thousand individuals in Iceland.

It is fair to say that Icelanders have welcomed this new service and that Icelanders have used their digital driving licence to demonstrate driving rights and as an ID card in elections.

A handy way to access the digital driving licence can be found in the Ísland.is app and on Ísland.is, where you can find instructions on how to load the licence in your smartphone wallet. All information about the type of driving licence is available on My pages in Ísland.is under licences and you can also access the digital driving licence.

Icelanders have not been traveling much since digital drivers licenses were made available due to Covid - 19 but it is important to note that it does not apply abroad and therefore you must remember the plastic when traveling outside of Iceland.

About 4 thousand plastic versions of driver's licenses are waiting for their owners at the District Commissioners, as can be seen in the attached photo.

District Commissioners strongly encourage drivers to pick their plastic licences before travelling abroad.
